Would like to direct folks to a couple of places on the internet that talk in an exceptional way about SURFING in ALASKA! Surfing is one of the primarily winter activities that Southwest Alaska’s Kodiak Island is known for. Kodiak is an extraordinary beautiful land that is so green it’s often likened to Ireland, the Emerald Isle. Yakutat is another favored locale for surfing, situated beneath the soaring, snow-covered St. Elias mountain range. Go to http://www.observatorybooks.com/surf.htm for a great description of how braving the waves can lead to a whole new appreciation for all life has to offer. In addition to being well-written, http://scottdickerson.com/blog/2007/surfing-alaska-in-winter/ is posted by an intrepid photographer who also surfs…look for his photos there of nearly transparent, mint and moss green waves curling under an aura of blow-back spray and the implacable gaze of Kodiak’s serene and snowy peaks – beautiful!
Please see our own website at http://www.travelguidebook.com for a wealth of helpful travel planning tips and information on Kodiak, covering bed & breakfasts, vacation rentals, wilderness lodges, bear viewing, whale watching, flightseeing, salt and fresh water fishing, boat charters, kayaking, dinner cruises, ATV excursions and island tours. Once you’ve decided you need to visit, try Mary at Kodiak Lodging and Reservations to arrange anything and everything you might like to try. If you’re just wanting to spend a few minutes reading about places in the northwest United States where you’ve never been, some favorites on our http://www.travelguidebook.com website are Billings in southwest Montana and Havre along the “High Line” in the north. Check out our write up on the International Selkirk Loop in the British Columbia section and its Idaho counterpart in that state. If you’re thinking Alaska, Skagway has several great editorials, and in the Featured Stories section there are entertaining articles about the publisher’s daughter partaking in a bear-viewing adventure on Katmai (“Bear Capitol”), a couple of gals who motorcycled to Alaska from California, and how two young women from Switzerland planned and carried out the trip of a lifetime. Wonderful information about Alaskan Brown Bears can be found in “Bear Viewing with Talon Air” and “Are Grizzly Bears Dangerous?”
